During and after the lockdown, we “fortunately” began to talk about school, about the problems of teaching, the tools and methods of teaching, the reality that students live and the importance of the school for them. Especially with the use of distance teaching, the theme of school dropouts has emerged strongly, in fact an old problem that perhaps today we can deal with a few more ideas.

I read with great interest the article published on this blog last week by four students. I don’t want to focus on the central topic of the article, which in my opinion deserves more in-depth analysis and maybe even a discussion with them, but I have grasped its intelligence.

In that article students ask themselves many questions without wanting to find an immediate answer.

The 2020-2021 period had to win the struggle with the mental-health taboo, because the diffusion of the Covid-19 had expanded the necessity of approaching this argument in our time with more bravery. We want to reflect on this.

In our opinion mental health is still a secondary theme compared to physical wellbeing. It is thought that in 10 years the mental weakness will pass the physical disease because mental health is one of most disregarded areas of public health. “ Mens sana in corpore sano” , a Latin proverb; perhaps Latin believed in a correspondence between these two and in this pandemic period this one could not be obvious.

Although my experience within the Teen Addiction Service is just at its beginning, there are already many considerations that I constantly find myself sharing with colleagues, and whether they are psychologists, psychiatrics, or specialists in toxicology, one of the recurring topics is surely the analysis of the question: are we sure this is the right place for this boy/girl?

These days at school there is a big ferment among students and teachers of the last-year classes for the debate that started, following the students’ petition, addressed to the minister Patrizio Bianchi, to abolish the writing tests of the final exam. Teaching in a last-year class, I am immediately called into question by the students: “Miss, do you think it’s normal, in mid-November that we still do not know how our exam will look like this year?”

How human curiosity is moving away from planet Earth

We often talk among us and with other colleagues who work as doctors in different branches with passion and difficulties.

In all the talks at one point the conversation is about the many progresses made in the medical field in the last ten years. Many treatments that we studied during our degree course have become obsolete and others that at the time appeared almost science fiction have instead become reality. Stem cells, targeted cancer therapies, monoclonal antibodies and 3D printed prostheses are just some of today’s medical realities.
