You went to a seaside destination \u2014 of course it&#8217;s wonderful.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not exactly. Let me continue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The colors, the scents, the hospitality, the modesty, the deep faith \u2014 it&#8217;s something impossible to explain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Maybe&#8230; but I still don&#8217;t see anything so extraordinary.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let me explain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I discovered an unexpected land, I came to understand a remarkable people, and I witnessed just how powerful love can be \u2014 and how it can change the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;What do you mean?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You know, I had the privilege of attending a Turkish wedding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Oh my God, wonderful! Tell me everything.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wait, wait. It wasn&#8217;t a typical Turkish wedding. It was the union of two cultures, a story of inclusion, of overcoming borders. A story that, if the whole world could truly understand it, would make these damn wars, this constant hostility, this tendency to see the &#8220;other&#8221; as someone to defend ourselves against, disappear in an instant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;What do you mean?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s the story of a Turkish woman and a Dutch man who met in Rome and created something magnificent together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;No way. Turkey and the Netherlands? How is that even possible?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>All you need is love.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We were all there. Every single one of us. We were there because two people fell in love \u2014 and continue to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Come on, don&#8217;t keep me in suspense. Tell me!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Well&#8230; I was hosted by a Turkish family, and even though neither parent spoke English, we understood each other perfectly through our eyes. My Turkish friend translated into English, but honestly&#8230; her mother understood exactly what I was saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Okay, fine, but get to the point!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As I was saying&#8230; we were all there because of a love that transcended borders. I saw firsthand how powerful love can be when it is real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two families \u2014 one from the Netherlands and one from Turkey \u2014 had come together to celebrate love. Friends from all over the world were there to celebrate their friends, who had created something almost unimaginable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I danced the <em>Halay<\/em>, hand in hand with a Turkish little girl. She knew perfectly well that I was a foreigner, yet she smiled at me, had the time of her life, and never let go of my finger for a single moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We all wore indescribable smiles, and there was a light in our eyes that will be difficult to forget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;That&#8217;s beautiful. I&#8217;m so jealous! But why did you say that if everyone discovered this, the world would be a better place?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do you know that feeling when you meet someone you&#8217;ve never met before?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Yes.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And when you meet them, you already don&#8217;t trust them because you&#8217;ve been taught never to trust strangers?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Yes.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Well, that&#8217;s the answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Ugh! Explain yourself better. I don&#8217;t understand where you&#8217;re going with this.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything I&#8217;ve told you would never have been possible if the two people at the center of this story had seen someone different from themselves as a person to protect themselves from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, they saw no differences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They were curious. They opened themselves up. They tried to understand two worlds and two cultures that were profoundly different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Well, when you put it that way&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And imagine extending that mindset beyond the relationship between a man and a woman in love. Imagine applying it to the very concept of &#8220;difference.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Think about immigrants. Think about people who weren&#8217;t born in our country, who don&#8217;t share our culture, our way of thinking, or our habits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Imagine if, instead of defending ourselves from those we identify as &#8220;different,&#8221; we tried to welcome them, to be curious about them, to understand their culture, their homeland, their traditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don&#8217;t you think the world might become a better place?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Well&#8230; yes. Looking at it that way, I&#8217;d say you do have a point.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, it&#8217;s not that simple. There are so many nuances to consider that we could talk about it for hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But I want to tell you one last story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;What&#8217;s that?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those intense days I mentioned \u2014 I experienced them day by day with my Turkish friend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You should have seen her. She was so proud to show me her land, her history, her traditions, and to act as my interpreter whenever people mistook me for Turkish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And do you know something?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;What?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The day before I left, we said goodbye and hugged each other so tightly that neither of us wanted to let go. Our eyes filled with tears because we knew we had experienced something truly special.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Of course. I can imagine. After days like that, saying goodbye can&#8217;t be easy.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But while I was hugging her, I felt full.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Full of something I will carry with me forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Full of something I want to tell others about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Full of emotions that will be difficult to forget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;And how could you ever forget something like that?
