Iatrogenic damage is a medical term used when the intervention of a doctor to cure a pathology has instead produced a damage.
For a long time the motto of doctors is “primum non nocere”: first of all, do not harm. It means that every time you are going to intervene in the profession you must first think if your intervention will create a bigger problem than the original pathology. This obviously does not refer to the side effects of drugs or scars from surgery that are unfortunately included in the treatment of many diseases, but to different events.
Lately in my profession I find myself more and more in front of young adults who come to ask for a psychotherapy after a path in infantile neuropsychiatry. A path that starts from the report of a problem by the school and proceeds with the sending by the neuropsychiatrist who makes tests on the child and sends it to the speech therapist, the ophthalmologist and finally (in the best case) the psychologist. The school provides “special” material for the child and maybe even a support teacher. The child grows up convinced of being physically, brain defective and, if miraculously manages to finish school, will have a thought printed on fire in mind: “But what am I committed to do? I\u2019d better settle for a simple job, a quiet life”. Thinking of fighting to get where you want is simply impossible when from elementary school everyone has repeated that you were different and a little broken. Someone crazier than the others does not give up and, although convinced that he has a hole in his brain, goes to the psychotherapist. When these children come to me, now grown up, I see the phrase in the title of this article: iatrogenic damage. If teachers and doctors detect a malaise, a problem in a child why don\u2019t they stop for a second to try to understand? Why rely on tests for diagnosis? Why don\u2019t they ask themselves if their intervention can make that kid feel even worse? Primum non nocere. It is important and necessary to point out that there is a problem that manifests itself in childhood. But are we absolutely sure that we have understood all of this problem, this malaise?
We are the first generation of psychotherapists to deal with the first adults classified as neurodifferent in childhood. A comparison and research on what has been good and what has not worked in the last 15 years I think is due.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
